Woman bought three abandoned homes in Italy for $5

Rubia Daniels snapped up three abandoned homes in a small town in Italy for just $5. Now she is part-way through fixing them up.

When a US woman saw a dirt-cheap deal on houses in Italy back in 2019, within days she was on a plane.

Now Rubia Daniels, originally from Brazil but who lives in California, owns three of the crumbling homes – which she bought for just $US3.30 (around $A5) combined, New York Post reports.

The catch, of course, is that purchasers must renovate the properties within a certain time frame – something that the 49-year-old is already well on the way to achieving.

When Ms Daniels, who works in the solar industry, first heard of the dirt-cheap homes being offered in order to help repopulate abandoned towns in Italy, she felt a spark.

“I was so amazed. It was one of those things where you have to see it to make sure it’s true,” the San Francisco resident told the outlet.

“I did my research, and within three days I had my plane ticket, a rental car, the hotel, and I left.”

The spot she was headed for was Mussomeli, a town of around 10,000 residents in the centre of Sicily.

Mussomeli is just one of many towns and villages in Italy offering up properties for rock-bottom prices in a bid to help combat dwindling populations.

It’s a trend that predates the coronavirus pandemic.

In 2019, for instance, the Sicilian town of Sambuca di Sicilia rose to fame for selling its abandoned homes for €1 (around $A1.60 at the time).

Two years later, another batch of homes there came up for sale again, with the price doubled – to €2.

Similarly, the southern Italian town of Laurenzana in 2021 offered up its own abandoned homes for €1 each.

Still, as low as the prices were, the properties required anywhere between $A35,000 to $A135,000 to restore – and owners had three years to complete the work.
She plans to convert one of the buildings into a wellness centre to give back to a community that has embraced her arrival.

In Mussomeli, Ms Daniels has different plans for each structure she owns.

One will be where she stays whenever she’s in town. Meanwhile, in an effort to give back to the community, she’ll convert the second into an art gallery and the third into a wellness centre. The wellness centre will be her biggest renovation.

After her purchase in July 2019, Ms Daniels began her restoration process later that year.

For now, the exteriors of two properties are completed with the last one yet to begin, but 2020 threw a spanner in the initial progress.

“Covid-19 happened and we weren’t allowed to go back, so I just started renovations again last year,” she told the outlet.

For Ms Daniels, the town of Mussomeli reminded her of her hometown near the Brazilian capital of Brasilia.

Beyond a pocket-change purchase of property, she also got warm neighbours.

“People were super welcoming and everyone wanted to have a coffee with me,” she told Insider. “The realtors embraced me like a sister – they were with me every single day through the time I was there.”

Aussie travellers eager to visit Greece now more than ever

While it may come as no surprise given how stunning and picturesque the country is, Aussies are keener now more than ever to head over to the Mediterranean hotspot, according to new research from Webjet.

The online travel company revealed bookings to Athens have gone up a whopping 369.5 per cent with the Greek capital the third most searched international destination for travel between June 1 and August 1 this year, a huge climb from placing 9th in 2022.

It also came fourth as the most popular destination booked by 18-25-year-olds during those same months.

Aussie are more eager than ever to head to Greece, according to new research.

Hashtags ‘greekislands’ and ‘santorini’ had 2 million views in Australia since January.

Meanwhile, Greece is dominating TikTok travel bucket lists, with #greekislands and #santorini racking up a combined total of 12 million views in Australia in the last four months.

“Greece seems to cast a unique spell over Aussies during the European summer season,”

David Galt, CEO Webjet OTA, told news.com.au.

“Over Easter, Aussies were choosing to jet off closer to home with Bali, Auckland and Christchurch nabbing the top international travel spots in 2023.

“But now, with the promise of glistening blue waters and sunshine, Greece has jumped right into the top three most searched international destinations for EU summer.”

While Greece has always been a popular destination for Aussies during this season, scoring the ninth most searched international destination in the same period last year, Webjet has seen bookings boom by a big 369.5 per cent compared to 2022.

“There are likely a number of factors at play including the rise of travelling for pleasure rather than post-Covid VRF (visiting relatives and friends) travel,” Mr Galt said.

“But anyone who finds themselves on TikTok would be hard-pressed to miss the millions of views racking up on videos associated with Greek travel, particularly around islands such as Santorini.

Nothing beats the beautiful, traditional white and blue alleys of Mykonos.

The destination is also proving particularly popular with a younger audience, with Athens being the fourth most booked international destination for the EU summer this year among 18 to 25-year-olds.

“It’s no surprise when you look at the itineraries full of culture, beaches, and outstanding views being shown across TikTok,” Mr Galt told news.com.au.

“If you’re interested in exploring for yourself, it’s not too late to book, with prices for the season starting at $1130 return from Sydney to Athens in July (prices found on April 17, 2023 for travel departing between June 2023 and August 2023).
